You and I, dear reader, are free spirits. We cannot be tamed, we will forever be unleashed.
The city cannot consume us. Maybe we are one with the city; we have to work anyway, don’t we? There are duties and responsibilities to be covered and completed, and that is just fine.
However, there are moments, moments when we take the road, the highways, when we show our truest nature.
We love to devour miles, and not only in the pavement. There are off-road adventures to be taken, too.
Gravel, sand or even snow, in the coldest days of December: Nothing compares to an adventure behind the wheel.
And one of your greatest allies for these endeavors -over the pavement or over the toughest rocky road- is the 2019 Jeep Renegade.
Ready for action
This beauty is available in four different trims: Sport, Latitude, Limited and Trailhawk, the latter being the one that I had the opportunity to drive for this review -and the most ‘off-roady’ of them all, having a hardcore four-wheel drive.
The rest of the trims are front-wheel drive, but can also be chosen, optionally, with a ‘lighter’ AWD system.
Under the hood, we will find a four cylinder, 2.4-liter engine that boasts out 180 hp and 175 lb-feet of torque. This engine is standard for all trims.
Now, it should be noted that the Limited and the Trailhawk can be equipped with a 1.3-liter four-cylinder ‘heart’, that reaches 177 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque.
Regarding the transmission, we are talking about a nine-speed automatic, all across the board.
Let us look at the equipment that we can find in every trim.
The base trim, the Sport, offers 16-inch steel wheels, manually adjustable mirrors, keyless entry, a rearview camera, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, Bluetooth, a 5-inch touchscreen, a USB port and a six-speaker sound system.
This first trim can be equipped with the Sport Appearance package (alloy wheels, roof rails and privacy glass), the Power & Air Group package (heated and power-adjustable outside mirrors, cruise control and air conditioning) or the Uconnect 7.0 Group package (dual-zone automatic climate control, satellite radio, a 7-inch touchscreen, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility).
If you go with the Latitude trim, you will get all three packages. In addition, it offers fog lights, automatic headlights, ambient LED lighting, leather-wrapped steering wheel and a second-row USB port.
This second trim can be chosen with the Cold Weather Group package (automatic wipers with de-icers, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and rubber floor mats).
The third trim, the Limited, includes this Cold Weather Group package from the get-go, and also adds 18-inch wheels, keyless ignition and entry (with remote engine start), an upgraded driver information display, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a 115-volt household-style power outlet, leather upholstery and much more.
The Trailhawk trim is just a beast, one that you will enjoy riding in the hardest of roads.
All-terrain tires mounted on 17-inch wheels, four-wheel drive with low-range settings, hill descent control, a raised suspension, tow hooks, underbody skid plates, a full-size spare tire, unique exterior and interior accents, are just a few of the perks that you will find here.
There is still a bunch of optional equipment available, get the full 411 with your favorite Jeep dealer.
Behind the wheel
If you take this bad boy on the streets or the highway, you will be surprised about how agile its steering is. It does not feel bulky or slow: This is one nimble, dynamic, awesome piece of machinery to drive around the city or for long road trips.
Now, it is on the off-road domains where it truly shines.
The rocky, tough roads, the trails that you will be tracing, are the real playground for the Renegade.
You will get through mud. You will get through water. There will be obstacles and you will just overcome them.
It should be noted that even though the Trailhawk trim is the one designed to be ‘truly’ off-road; this is a very off-road capable vehicle, since any of the trims offers ample ground clearance. Just choose any trim that adapts to your budget and needs, and you will get to have your adventure anyway.
For us free spirits, this is the Jeep to get. It will take you to the office on weekdays and accompany you to your outdoors adventures on the weekends: A tough and adventurous bad boy that will not let you down.
