The 2018 Volkswagen Jetta was born in 1979. Across the globe, sometimes with a different name, it has several generations under its belt. What is its secret to be this long-lived? Is there a magic formula or a car ‘eternal fountain of youth’ that VW knows but they are not telling us about?
Well, no. In my opinion, the success and long life of the Volkswagen Jetta is based on the fearlessness of the brand, mainly when it comes to embrace change and reinvention, a couple of traits that have accompanied the Jetta for almost 40 years, and that we find, once again, in the 2018 Volkswagen Jetta.
Engine and fuel economy
The 2018 Jetta, a compact family car, is available in six different trims: S, Wolfsburg Edition, SE, SE Sport, SEL and GLI.
For this review, I had the opportunity to drive the SEL trim, one of the most equipped.
This trim has a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers 170 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. It is equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), this engine’s fuel economy is estimated at 24 miles per gallon in the city and 33 miles per gallon on the highway.
It is worth to notice that regardless on which trim you choose, the 2018 VW Jetta is equipped with front-wheel drive.
Just to give you a general landscape of the general features, the base trim offers a four-speaker sound system with a 5-inch touchscreen interface and a CD player, cloth upholstery, manual seats, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, heated side mirrors and 16 inch aluminum wheels, just to name a few of the accessories.
But if you choose the SEL trim, you’ll also get automatic wipers and headlights, a cooled glove box, a premium sound system, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a power-adjustable driver seat.
On the safety front, the SEL trim offers us the very useful forward collision warning system with emergency braking.
Performance and interior
The 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine is a pretty little beast. It gives the 2018 VW Jetta a passionate heart, one that will enable you to take the streets and the highways in exciting ways.
In comparison, the lower trims have a 1.4-liter turbo-four cylinder engine, remember that when you ask for your test drive.
It is a quick, agile, responsive car, just like its predecessors. Its weakness? Not that agile on taking corners.
And talking about its interior, you will find comfort and quality materials all around. It offers a quiet ride, something that is always welcome, especially in long road trips.
It is also worth noting that this is a very roomy, very spacious family car. You’ll find enough room in its cabin to invite tall friends to ride along, and also enough room on the trunk for your luggage or groceries.
The 2018 Volkswagen Jetta not only adapts with the times: It evolves. It’s roomy enough to welcome a family and is powerful enough to offer an exciting ride. A well rounded option for a compact family car.
