The humanity has five senses. That is what nature gave us, that is how we survive, that is how we live, and that is how we get through life.
We smell fragrances, we see beautiful landscapes, we touch the ones we love, we hear the melodies we enjoy and we taste the dishes our palate enjoys the most, too.
So… what happens when you come across a vehicle that just make your senses explode? (Even taste, because it turns out to be a palate cleanser for other driving experiences you had before… ok, I took a bit of poetic license there).
That seamless integration of the senses, that enjoyment of impeccable machinery, of flawless design, of the perfect symphony coming from under the hood, it is a sixth sense by itself.
It is a sense woken up by the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class. Let us take a look.
A young upstart with a strong heart
This is a young one… young one? This is a newborn, practically.
Unveiled as a concept car on April of last year in the Shanghai Auto Show, this beauty made its official debut a couple of months later, in Park City, Utah.
Daimler AG wanted to create a new subcompact crossover Sports Utility Vehicle, to be the choice between the GLA-Class crossover and the full sized GLC-Class.
It is available in two trim levels: The base GLB 250 and the GLB 250 4Matic, the latter adds AWD.
Under the hood, in both trims you will find a powerful 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, that reaches 221 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, mated to an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
According to the EPA, this powertrain delivers 23 miles per gallon in the city and 20 miles per gallon on the highway (31, in the case of the 4Matic).
There are a couple of packages available for this beauty, but it should be noted that you will get a plethora of amenities from the get-go.
Right out the factory, you get your GLB-Class with a power liftgate, simulated leather upholstery, LED headligths, MB’s MBUX infotainment system, Apple and CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility; and safety-wise, you will also get automatic emergency breaking and forward collision warning.
The Premium and Driver optional packages will add features such as blind spot monitoring, 10.25-inch display screens, adaptive cruise control and emergency stop assist, just to name a few examples.
I also should be noted that there are some individual, stand-alone options available, like leather upholstery, heated seats and a premium sound system.
Behind the wheel
You will sense a rush of adrenaline going through your body, when this gorgeous piece of machinery goes from 0 to 60 in mere 6.5 seconds.
This is unapologetic power, one that puts competitors in this segment to shame.
You will also feel confidence, with its trusworthy driving and breaking.
The streets and road await: You will want to take this bad boy for your daily commute, long highway trips or even off-road adventures, in the case of the 4matic.
Regarding the inside of the car, is comfortable enough to not be uncomfortable in long trips, it is spacious and you will enjoy its huge outward visibility.
In addition, tech-wise, it is the top of the heap, with its driver assist features and infotainment systems more than delivering what you need.
A well-assorted equipment, a handsome figure and a powerful engine make one of the most complete, useful and comfortable mid-sized SUV on the market.
